Asian Men on American TV Are Having a Moment

I just read a great article on Vulture about Asian Dudes On TV Getting Some, and it makes me glad someone else put it in words. It also makes me wonder about Asian women and how their list shapes up. Ming-Na Wen had a great bit to say at NerdHQ's Badass Women panel at SDCC this year, how her early roles were usually hookers. It was funny, and then it was sad.

I have a co-worker whose favorite cinematic character is Long Duck Dong. I just looked at him like

He was like a Martian to me. Like, how do you not see the blatant offensiveness in that yellowface caricature? And why do you feel the need to wear a t-shirt with his face on it, quoting it??? How, in your world, is that okay? I am fascinated to know. And I don't know how to talk to the guy about it, because how do you tell the guy, "Hey, you're a racist moron dickweed who dresses like an 11-year-old boy in 1994, despite the fact that you're 50. Wait. I see now. You're simple. You hide from the world in your clothes and use offensiveness as a defense mechanism so you can surround yourself with other racist asshats who like your style. This makes me feel better about myself and the way I detest everything about you." Because that's mean. Accurate, but mean.

Articles like that one at Vulture make me feel better, when I have interactions with That Guy at work. It helps to know progress is being made. It helps to know more casting directors will be open to my friends' auditions, and the guys I find crazy-talented and sexy are having a better chance of being seen by the world.

The fact that racism can still prevent my friends from getting jobs, seriously sickens me. This article is encouraging. I don't exactly know why I felt called to share it here. But if you have an hour to kill, and you haven't seen it (and even if you have), you should definitely watch the NerdHQ panel. Great stuff in there.
